The present invention relates to a membrane assembly for continuous electrodialytic desalination or demineralization, comprising at least one cation and anion exchange membrane in a parallel arrangement, wherein the surface of the membranes each at least partially on one or both sides identically shaped or differently shaped elevations and depressions, so that the depressions between the elevations form channels and the membranes are at least partially in contact with each other via the elevations arranged on their surfaces, so that a channel system is formed between the membranes, through which diluate or concentrate flows. Furthermore, the present invention relates to an electrodialysis device comprising the membrane assembly and to a process for continuous electrodialytic desalination.
