Combustion engine operating method for an engine with a pressure sensor arranged between a low-pressure line and a high pressure pump and a pressure reduction connection between the pump and the low-pressure line. According to the method, with the engine switched off and the pressure reduction connection open, an output signal from the pressure sensor is used to test the low-pressure damper for correct operation. The invention also relates to a corresponding control unit for a combustion engine that can be used to implement the inventive method.
