The method involves axially moving a piston rod in a cylinder of a vibration damper. An absorbing medium displaced by the piston rod is received in a balancing region. Instantaneous pressure is detected and a signal is output by a pressure sensor (23). The output signal is combined with another signal e.g. zero-signal and one-signal, of a position sensor (25) and supplied to an electronic evaluation unit (29). The output signal of the pressure sensor is detected and a position of the damper is detected based on the detected signal when the one-signal is output by the position sensor.
