Method for measuring the wall thickness (d) of a cylinder lining (3a) embedded within a crankcase by use of a ultrasonic probe (5) that is held within a liquid coupling agent (6). The ultrasound impulse (7) is focussed on the interface between the lining and the surrounding material and the time of flight of an echo signal is used to determine the wall thickness. An independent claim is included for a corresponding device.
