The sheet opener uses a suction device which has a compressed air supply (21) as well as a mechanical conversion device to divert the incoming compressed air and generate the dynamic underpressure which acts on at least one surface of the paper sheet which is to be opened. The conversion device is mounted in the flow direction of the incoming compressed air adjoining the compressed air supply and has two opposing surfaces (22, 23) which run over one stretch substantially parallel or at a relative set-up angle so that the folded paper sheet which is to be opened is transported between these surfaces during operation.
