Process for decomposing air at low temperatures in a rectifier system for nitrogen-oxygen removal comprises compressing a first air stream (3) upstream of a cooling stage (8) to a first pressure which is lower than the operating pressure of a high pressure column (10), further compressing the first air stream in a post-compressor (5) to a second pressure which is higher than the first pressure, and compressing a second air stream (4) upstream of a pressure-relieving stage to the first pressure and feeding to the pressure-relieving stage under a third pressure which is lower than the second pressure. An independent claim is also included for a device for decomposing air at low temperatures for nitrogen-oxygen removal.
