A capacitance or inductance measurement procedure has a controllable (5) working frequency inductive or capacitive (9) proximity sensor (1) with processor (7) to make successive measurements at different frequencies for processing to remove measurements with interference at mobile phone or other frequencies. Includes Independent claims for the use of software controlled impulse patterns and switched impedance circuits to generate the working frequencies and for equipment using the procedure.
