The device comprises an actuator (10) which is located in the suction manifold (2). Depending on the pressure difference between the pressure inside the crankcase (6) and the pressure outside, the actuator can reduce the cross-section of the suction manifold. A venting pipe (13) which goes out of the crankcase, opens out into the suction manifold in the region of the actuator. An independent claim is also included for the method of generating a vacuum in the suction manifold.
