The reciprocating pump (10) especially for a hydraulic brake system in a vehicle has an externally driven piston (22) defining a cylinder chamber (48) and executing a cyclic movement changing the volume of the chamber. A valve (71) controls the flow rate of pressure medium through the pump and has a valve seat (66) with which interacts a shut-off component (68). The shut-off component is loaded by a valve closing spring (70) which acts on the shut-off component by a mechanical force component orientated at right angles to the flow direction (S) through the valve.
