A detector (5) detects light emitted from a light source (4). Exhaust gas containing particles or droplets is passed between two optical windows (2,3). At least one optical window (2,3) comprises a transparent substrate made of a glass that can withstand high temperatures, and an electrical heating element on the glass for bringing the temperature of the optical window to above the ignition temperature of a carbon compound.
