Process for aligning a drive shaft of a gear mechanism (31) in the form of a splined shaft with a clutch of an engine receiving the splined shaft during assembly of the gear mechanism and the engine comprises introducing a torque-generating tool (34) into a stopper (10) closing the gear opening (30) and transferring the toque to a rotating gear component (32). Torque is generated by the tool so that the stopper rotates the rotating gear component and the splined shaft. The engine and the gear are moved together until the splined shaft and the clutch fully engage. The engine and gear are fixed together. An independent claim is also included for a stopper for closing a gear opening.
