A method for continuous coating of a moving strip of material (12) using a liquid or viscous product has the product applied from a variable slit. The dosing rate is varied at the start and end of the coating process, e.g. during temporary stops in the process, by varying the width of the slit, or the pump pressure or via a bypass. The start/finish sequence is further enhanced by a movable blade to capture the material and prevent excess coating, with the blade retracted when the coating rate and material feed speed are correct.
