Nucleic acid sequences which code proteins necessary for the manufacture of the alginate are introduced into prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. The nucleic acid sequences form an operative unit. The cells are then cultured under suitable conditions. Finally, the alginate is recovered from the culture medium. The nucleic acid sequences are cloned in a vector, which is then introduced into the prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. In addition to the nucleic acid sequences, at least one regulatory nucleic acid sequence is provided, operatively coupled with them, in order to enable expression of the nucleic acid sequences in the prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. The regulator sequence comprises at least one promoter sequence. The coding nucleic acid sequences are obtainable from cells of brown algae or cells of the Pseudomonas genus or azobacter. They are obtainable from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Coded nucleic acid sequences are used with the Seq ID Nos. 1-6 defined in the specification (1311, 1485, 1170, 1428, 1469, 1425, 1392 nucleotides long, respectively), except for Seq ID No. 4 which is not defined. In addition sequences with the corresponding Seq ID Nos. 8 (1392 nucleotides long) and 9 (1446 nucleotides long) as defined in the specification are also introduced. Further variants and developments of the method are described in accordance with the foregoing principles. Independent claims are included for the corresponding vector comprising coding nucleic acid sequences and the host cell which includes it.
