The press has an extending telescopic arm (6) with a stacking space (2), and an auxiliary stacking carrier (7) mounted into the space for placing a paper sheet. Two sensors (1.1, 1.2) sense the luminous intensity of a printing design on the paper. A controller compares the sensed intensity with a reference value to shift the carrier into the space before the paper is placed in the space when the press is started or restarted. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a sheet-fed printing press.
