Regeneration of hydrotreating catalysts comprises oxidation at 270-540[deg]C to remove hydrocarbons, activation with an aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid and optionally a polyol at up to 100[deg]C, drying to a moisture content of 2-5 wt.% at 20-180[deg]C and sulfiding in a nitrogen stream containing 1-30 vol.% hydrogen and 1-30 vol.% hydrogen sulfide at 40-400[deg]C. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising a stripper connected in series with slurry phase reactor for oxidizing the catalyst followed by a liquid metering device and a high-speed mixer for activating the catalyst followed by a belt dryer followed by a sulfiding reactor, a cooler and a passivating reactor.
