The method for the running of an internal combustion engine entails keeping back exhaust gas in the combustion chamber during a compression ignition mode and compressing it during a load change, whereby a first volume of fuel is injected into the exhaust gas and a second volume of fuel fed into the combustion chamber so that a homogenous fuel/air mixture is formed in the combustion chamber. A self-ignition time of the fuel/air mixture formed from the first and second fuel volumes is established in dependence upon a ratio of the first to the second volume of fuel.
