The internal combustion engine (1) for liquid or gaseous fuels has a main combustion chamber and a pre-chamber (4), a device (2) for the forming of the main volume of fuel and air mixture and for introducing it into the main combustion chamber, and a device (3) for the direct injection of a first small volume of fuel into the main combustion chamber in the direction of the pre-chamber for the forming of a second volume of a mixture from the fuel and additional fuel from the main combustion chamber and air in the pre-chamber. An independent claim is included for method for the running of the aforesaid internal combustion engine.
