The method involves using an optical measurement device with at least one laser source (1) on a first object (5) and a target plate (6) on a second object (10), whereby the laser source and target plate can be rotated about first and second axes (4,9). It involves rotating the target plate and determining a target plate-rotation axis intercept point as a regression circle center of the set of laser incident points received by the target plate with the laser source not rotating, repeating with the source rotating and the plate fixed and aligning the objects until the target plate rotation axis intercept and the regression circle center coincide. An independent claim is also included for a point radiator unit for implementing the inventive method.
