An outlet valve for a piston compressor, e.g. for a cooling system, has the valve element (220) pressed against the bottom face (S1) of the cylinder (202) by a spring (250) clamped between the valve and the valve housing (210). The outer wall of the valve housing is sloped by at least 4 deg. to provide an uneven valve pressure on the valve seat and to provide a progressive valve opening/closing action. This reduces the sharp valve noise associated with conventional, balanced valves. The valve spring can also be non symmetrical.
