Operating method for a multiplicity of interacting units in which: each unit assigns a particular operating mode (a-e) a preference value; each unit suggests the operating mode (OP, OP') which it has assigned the highest preference value; the operating mode is selected that has the highest acceptance from all the suggested operating modes. The highest acceptance is defined as the total of the preference values for all the interacting units that has a minimum value. An independent claim is made for a control unit for a motor vehicle that has a multiplicity of operating modes.
