The irradiated laser power density is at least 109 W/cm2. The laser has a spot diameter at the surface of the sample of less than 100 micrometer. A metallic tip, such as a silver tip is used for focussing the laser beam. The sample material is stoichiometrically ablated. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for analysing element concentrations in a sample using LA-ICP-MS.
