Liquid crystal cell (2) has thin liquid crystal layer with twisted structure sandwiched between two spaced, transparent substrates with electrodes and has first polariser (6) transmitting oscillation part of electric light vector orthogonally to optical axis of absorbing molecule.Cell includes second polariser (8) transmitting oscillation fraction of electric light vector parallel to optical axis of absorbing molecule. There is at least one retarder (7) with negative double refraction and twisted structure.
