A process for producing a glass and fibre composite material, comprises adding 10- 30 wt% fibres to a glass powder, forming a blank, and then sintering the blank at a temperature in excess of 1000 oC. The fibres consist of at least one of SiC, alumino silicate glass, quartz glass, aluminium borosilicate, ZrO 2, oxynitride, Si 3N 4, or high melting point metals or their alloys.
