The parking brake has a brake actuator acting on one or more brake jaws and containing an electric motor. The method involves a control unit varying the magnitude of the shut-off current of the electric motor depending on the result of a counted event, e.g. the operation of the brakes or starting or stopping the vehicle, to achieve a predefined clamping force. An independent claim is also included for a control unit for controlling a parking brake.
