Acid deposition sensor for measuring the level of acid in the atmosphere comprises at least a glass element (12) with at least an exposable surface (14). The mass fractions of components in the glass are defined, with silicon, potassium, sodium, calcium and cobalt having oxide concentrations of up to 80, 40, 40, 10 and 1 percent respectively. The total mass fraction equals 100 percent with any other components having a mass fraction of less than 1 percent. An independent claim is included for a method for determining the level of acid in the atmosphere, whereby the change in the composition of a glass element sensor caused by water precipitation over a defined period is measured.
