A system for removing solid particles from waste water has waste water ducted into the top of a hopper (9) to run down into a lower collecting duct (15) and up through sloping louvers (14) to an upper outlet duct (7). The solid particles are trapped by the rising flow and drop into a lower trough. A concentric pipe (22) in the collecting trough rotates to align apertures in the outer and inner pipe to collect solids and sludge. A system for removing solid particles from waste water, especially in restricted headroom as in underground workings, has waste water ducted into the top of a hopper (9) to run down into a lower collecting duct (15) and up through an array of sloping louvers (14) to an upper outlet duct (7). The solid particles are trapped by the rising flow and drop into a lower trough. A concentric pipe (22) in the collecting trough rotates to align apertures in the outer and inner pipe to collect solids and sludge. The outer pipe is rotated periodically to close the duct and enable the trapped solids and sludge to be expelled using pneumatic pressure. The system can be moved and supported via an overhead rail (20).
