The method involves determining a quantity of fuel to be supplied (MFF) to each cylinder depending on a load parameter, determining a corrected fuel value (MFFCOR) depending on the quantity to be supplied and a lambda control factor (LAMFAC), producing an injection valve control signal from the corrected fuel quantity, determining the lambda control factor with a lambda controller, determining an estimate of a stoichiometric factor and adapting a parameter that influences the integral of the stoichiometric factor relative to the estimate over a period so that an actual lambda shift value is determined by integrating the lambda control factor over a period related to the estimate and dividing the integral by the length of the period.
