The method involves providing a lambda control circuit with a lambda probe arranged before a catalyst converter in an exhaust gas passage of an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is operated alternately by lambda modulation in a fatty phase with excess of fuel and in a lean phase with excess of air. Lambda modulation is controlled by using the lambda probe. Self-oscillation of the lambda control loop is detected. Parameters for regulating or controlling the lambda modulation are changed based upon the detected natural frequency of the lambda control loop. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing lambda regulation of an internal combustion engine.
