Measurement sensors (10) send first signal outputs (12,12') to signal evaluation circuits (19). The first evaluation circuit is in a control circuit (18) and the second is connected to a triggering matrix (34). A further measurement sensor (14) sends a second signal (16) to the triggering matrix if the seat is occupied. An optical sensor (26) monitors the position of the seat belt and there is a seat belt locking sensor (23) and a seat belt movement sensor (22). The sensors send a third signal (26) to the triggering matrix. The triggering matrix is connected to a trigger circuit (32) and a threshold calculating circuit (36) connected to a passenger protection system (20).
