An improved faster response control system for an IC engine has the crankshaft sensor (6) with integral processing to prepare part processed signals for the engine management system (4) thereby relieving the management system of some of the processing. The crankshaft sensor comprises a Hall effect device monitoring the gearing on the flywheel and the sensor is programmed with the characteristics of the flywheel.
