Panels with a gas-tight plastic cover (11) and filled with an internal support (12), e.g. microporous silicic acid granules, are pressed to a sheet and heated in a vacuum chamber where a liquid glass layer is formed on the outside. The panel is then cooled. The cover (11) can have internal ribs to aid the release of gas and any vents are sealed in a final reheating operation. A Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) A similar manufacturing method that includes the application of an additional layers (14), e.g. aluminum foil and/or plastics, on the outside; (2) A vacuum panel, especially for heat insulation, of this construction with additional layers (14) on the outside. The panel can be sealed at end strips (19, 20) which can be turned over to produce a rectangular building block.
