Preparation of azo compounds involves coupling a perfluoroalkanesulfonyl triazole with a nucleophilic coupling component. Preparation of azo compounds involves coupling a perfluoroalkanesulfonyl triazole of formulae (I) or (II) with a nucleophilic coupling component. R Fperfluoroalkyl (-CF 3, -C 2F 5, -C 3F 7, C 4F 9 etc); R 1 and R 2H, optionally mono- or poly-substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, heterocyclyl, aryl, hetaryl, acyl, halogen, haloalkyl, sulfo, sulfato, sulfonyl, sulfamoyl, alkylsulfonyl, phosphato, hydroxy, cyano, nitro, amino, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkinyloxy, alkylthio, carboxy, aminocarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, phenyl, naphthyl or a heterosubstituent; and ring III : optionally mono- or poly-substituted cycloalkane, cycloalkene, heterocycle, benzene or heteroarene. Independent claims are also included for (1) the azo compounds thus obtained; (2) the perfluoroalkanesulfonyl triazole starting materials of formulae (I) and (II); and (3) preparation of (I) and (II).
