A flat formable base layer(1) is prepared which has at least one decorative area(2). The base is then shaped by injecting plastic onto the front or rear faces in a molding tool, the final three-dimensional form being produced in at least part of the decorative area. Transparent plastic(8) may also be injected onto the front or rear sides of the base layer(1). Plastic(5) injection onto the rear side may occur after or before injection onto the front side or both may be injected on simultaneously. Base layers can be a plastic film, a metal foil, textile, veneer or a laminate. Decoration of the base layer may be on one or preferably both sides and is usually printed on. The entire decorative area of the base layer may be three-dimensionally shaped. An independent claim is included for a decorative component, in particular for embellishing vehicles, with a decorative area, at least part of which has a three-dimensional shape and which has a smooth transparent plastic layer(8) on the visible side joined to the entire surface area of the base layer.
