Soffit element (E) for a window opening (2) in a building wall (1) is designed as a plate part for inserting between a window frame (3) and the wall. The soffit element has first edges (6, 6') that in the assembled state face into a room or out of a room, and second edges that face the wall. The soffit element has at least one insertion opening (7) that runs perpendicularly to a first edge and opens into one of the first edges a distance (A) away from the opposite-lying first edge.
