A method for identifying collisions in a vehicle has at least one acceleration sensor (2) mounted on an inertial mass which is itself elastically mounted on the rigid structure of the vehicle. Typical mountings include the engine and/or the power train. The sensor readings are processed over time increments to determine the motion vectors and the severity of the collision and thereby to initiate the appropriate collision protection systems.
