The method involves calculating a longitudinal acceleration of a motor vehicle on a basis of a drive train model. A positively adjusting longitudinal acceleration of the motor vehicle is measured with the help of a longitudinal acceleration sensor. The measured positively adjusting longitudinal acceleration is compared with the calculated longitudinal acceleration. A malfunctioning in the drive train of the motor vehicle is concluded if the measured positively adjusting longitudinal acceleration differs from the calculated longitudinal acceleration.
