The mechanism has a guide-links (11, 13, 15), and a lift lever (1) for lifting a roof unit above a level of a closed vehicle roof. The lever has pivots (5, 7, 9), of which one (5) is connected with the unit and the other pivots (7, 9) slide inside the link to vertically lift the pivot (5) for lifting the unit. The distance between the pivots (7, 9) amounts to 0.3 to 0.8 times the distance between the pivots (5, 7) and the pivots (5, 9). An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle with a lift mechanism for a roof unit such as elevating roof and/or retractable roof.
