The laser system has an excitation source for exciting a laser-active disk (2) arranged in a resonator which outputs a laser beam (5) with a single longitudinal mode. A Q-switch (8) is provided in the resonator. A control device (9) is provided for switching the Q-switch. The control device disconnects the Q-switch when a gain threshold of the laser active disk is reached for the first time. An independent claim is included for a method of Q-switching a laser system.
