Primary oxide hardening of metal melts comprises adding an active gas to the melt to produce a finely divided oxide dispersion within the melt. Preferred Features: The active gas is injected into the melt, preferably through the base of a metallurgical melt vessel. The active gas is an oxide chloride, alcoholate or disiloxane depending on the melting point of each alloy.
