The parts of an automotive body [6,7] are welded [8] together using a laser [1] and are held in contact by a clamping unit [10] that has actuators [18,19]. The clamping system operates separately from the laser and accommodates spacing [z] in the parts. The unit is mounted on the arm [27] of an industrial robot coupled to a controller [39].
