The method is for the functional testing of a vehicle's component, and especially an automatic or automated manual transmission, whereby depending upon the actual operating state of the transmission it is determined whether a functional test takes place, and then, if an error function is detected at least one error reaction is put into effect. A functional test is carried out only in such operating states of the transmission in which an eventually apparent error function has no consequences on the safety of the vehicle. An independent claim is included for a device for functional testing of especially a motor vehicle's automatic transmission or automated manual transmission.
