The measuring apparatus has two adjacent friction bodies (12,14) which are rotatable and slidably moveable relative to each other. A rotary drive is provided for one of the friction bodies. A brake unit (30) is provided which applies a braking force to the other body (14). The braking force increases with increasing rotation of the other body. One of the two friction bodies has samples (18) which are arranged like the sides of a pyramid. Independent claims also cover a method of measuring friction.
