A process for producing images and stripes on a component, comprises forming a substrate, surrounding areas of the substrate with a resin impregnated glass fibre material, and applying a cover material to the outer surface of the glass fibre material. The binding agent is removed after hardening, and a resin is then applied to the outer surface of the sleeve so a transparent hardening layer (45) is formed. The hardening layer is then polished. Part of the cover material is natural and part is synthetic, and the layer is less than 2mm thick.
