A controller switches the range of transmission to a shift position selected by a shift operation unit (2) with the combination of ON-OFF signal of switches (24-1 - 24-7) on operating a shift lever (6) to advance and retreat range gates (8D,8R) on both sides of a neutral range gate (8N). An initialization mechanism (14) automatically positions the shift lever to neutral range, when not operating at the neutral range gate.
