An exhaust gas recycle system for an internal combustion engine with a recycle line between the outlet - and inlet -manifolds (16,18) has a control unit (25,26) by which is adjusted the oxygen concentration in the suction manifold and the total mass of gas fed to at least one of the cylinders. Independent claims are included for the method of adjusting the feed composition when exhaust gas is recycled, and systems in which the oxygen content of the inlet gas is adjusted via either of the valves (17) or (13), and where the inlet manifold pressure is measured by a sensor (12).
