The receiver has correlators (13) outputting sampled I and Q values for a tap. A filter (30) receives the sampled values and extracts correlation characteristics of the sampled I and Q values. The filter selectively stores the I and Q values or modified I and Q values based on a screening process. The sampled values of a tap not having a peak are discarded, and are not stored in a memory (15).
