Method for manufacturing water-soluble dispersed iron oxide nano-particles involves mixing iron solutions, organic acid and adjusting pH. The method involves mixing solutions containing Fe 2+and Fe 3+in concentrations of 1:2 to 1:4, adding a suitable amount of organic acid as adhesive agent, adjusting the pH value of the solution to more than 10 to produce precipitation, collecting and washing the precipitate and adding an excess quantity of organic acid as adhesive agent, adding a suitable quantity of organic solution and water to remove the excess amount of organic acid and then collecting the purified iron oxide nano-particles. The organic acid can be acetic acid or oleic acid. An independent claim is also included for a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging comprising water-soluble dispersed iron oxide nano-particles and water.
