Method for determining the degree of wear of a dental instrument, e.g. a drill or file that is used with a pneumatic or electric drive. The instrument is provided with an identifier which is entered in the memory of the control unit for the drive unit every time it is used. Recorded with the identifier is the duration of use, the angular velocity during use and the torque. Processing and aggregating of these values allows the wear of the instrument to be determined. An independent claim is included for a corresponding device for implementation of the inventive method.
