A water filter comprises a TDS water quality measurement unit (30) on the outside of a jug (21), with contacts (31) that extend inside the jug. The outer surface of the jug has a holder (23) for the measurement unit, and the holder has a display lamp which lights up when the filter cartridge needs to be changed. The measurement unit has a seal (35) and a number of hooks that locate with a hole in the jug.
