A support ring (2) for a telescopic umbrella shaft (1, 3) is fitted to the bottom end of the outer shaft and has a polygonal inner profile to slide over the inner shaft. The ring is firmly secured to the outer shaft and prevents the stop on the inner shaft from splaying the outer shaft. The edges of the ring are chamfered to prevent injury when opening and closing the umbrella.
